Is karate effective in Self-Defence ?
Karate is the ultimate in unarmed self-defence. It is designed to disable with one move; it has techniques against all forms of attack and has been developed through centuries of harsh experience for modern day use. Most importantly, it trains the mental and emotional skills of combat, as well as the physical. Strength and size are not important in Karate, although strength is one of the required qualities, It is equally augmented by relying on technique, speed and co-ordination. Karate teaches you how to avoid possible confrontations - it is far better to de-fuse or to avoid a dangerous situation than to confront it.But if it cannot be avoided then karate teaches the techniques to finish the situation with one finshing blow!!.
What is the JKA ?
JKA (Japan Karate Association) : This is the world's largest shotokan karate organisation, based in Japan, it founded, researched, and refined the shotokan karate system, originally founded and set up by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Karate is the most popular martial arts practised by Men, Women, & Children throughout the world. According to various studies, there are between 50 million o 100 million karate practitioners in the world. JKA Shotokan karate is much more than merely physical fighting. It is an art of mental & physical self-development through self-discipline, as well as an exciting sport. There is something in it for everyone. Developed from the legacy, philosophy, and strategies of the Japanese Samurai Warriors. Through repetitive hard training and practice of its fundamentals over a period of time, JKA Shotokan karate develops not only a strong body, but also a sharp mind, a good noble heart, and positive character. Thus enabling a dedicated practitioner to overcome obstacles in their life, (both tangible and intangible) through its training. The karate you will learn at the Shotokan JKA Academy will be this sort of karate. This is the main difference from our karate and of other types of karate or martial arts. Obviously depending on your age. Do I need to be in excellent physical shape to start karate?
Not really. Since karate will gradually improve your fitness as you progress, your starting point is less important than the effort you put into it along the way. At the Shotokan JKA Academy, our traditional focus on the basics and on correct form make it easy for beginners to train together with experienced individuals yet still progress at their own level of fitness and expertise. If you are less fit, your progress at the start will simply be more moderate; as your fitness improves,so will the pace at which you advance. If you have any health conditions, please check with your doctor first before starting our classes.
What are some of the benefits that I can expect from the classes ?
Shotokan Karate JKA Academy classes have been structured so that you will have tremendous benefits for your whole body, mind and spirit. Physically, our karate classes are devised so that they are not only a method of learning self-defence but also are good for the heart, to strengthen bones, build & tone muscles, create resilience, develop hand-eye coordination, and build up a strong immune system to make the body less susceptible to sickness and injury through hard resistance training. Mentally, our karate training helps you to develop patience, a never-giving-up attitude and many other positive qualities needed to become a success in your life. It is vitally important to find an instructor who really understands the importance of these qualities & concepts and has realised these himself, as then he can develop them in his students more effectively. Aktar sensei over the years has devised the structure of the programme, so that it is one of the most comprehensive in the world. Starting with a strong solid foundation in Shotokan JKA, he brings in concepts from his other martial arts slowly wherever applicable, gradually as the students progress up the grades he ensures their martial arts training is more balanced, applicable, realistic, and practically effective.
Is Karate a Sport ? ...How does karate compare with other sports & arts..?
Karate is one of the most balanced and complete ways of keeping in good physical condition. All martial arts have their weak and strong attributes and points, Karate incorporates the use of the entire body in which legs, hips, spine, shoulders and arms are co-ordinated to develop balance, flexibility, poise, speed, strength and stamina. No other form of training uses as many parts of the body to such an extent. Karate is not seasonal and so one's condition can be maintained throughout the year. Other forms of training, where exercise for the sake of exercise is done, become a chore after the first enthusiasm passes and are invariably dropped. However, Karate becomes more interesting and rewarding as you progress, without any limit. Even after decades of training, students will still be learning and improving their techniques - this is very rare in many other sports, where at the age past 30 to 40 years for example, you are done physically for life !!.
What is Required of Me or my Child on Joining the Shotokan JKA Academy?
Commitment is the key thing required to join us. For Juniors and Adult members a minimum of 4-5 years and for the younger Tiny Tigers 6-7 years on average to progress towards your first Black belt. With Over 4 decades of martial arts practise & experience, Aktar sensei 6th Dan has been so passionate about martial arts himself and so he is able to set out an ideal positive character self-discipline structure for all members at the Shotokan JKA Academy to follow, which is in line with all humanistic values, philosophies, and all of his learning experiences combined & accumulated, and which he believes also provides a true meaning for training in life in the martial arts for a dedicated student ... as all of these concepts signify the importance of treating others the way you expect to be treated. His vision is to see all students progressing as a big happy family, along our ideals & tenants of the Student Creed ( Mostly applicable to our Tiny Tigers & Junior Students ) and the Academy Rules plus the Dojo Code & Principles of Black Belt Excellence (Applicable to all). We expect all our students who join us to begin to learn them thoroughly & apply them in the Dojo and in their daily life, i.e at home, at School, work etc, where ever possible. It is also vitally important to believe in your self and most importantly in your chief coach/instructor(Sensei) and his teachings as well as all the assistant instructors, (Sampais) as they are your role models and have all followed the same teachings at the Shotokan JKA Academy just with passion and are now in a better position to help you succeed in all aspects of your life. The ultimate aim of the Shotokan JKA Academy as set out by Aktar sensei 6th Dan is to help build up a stronger, smarter, and wiser community, towards a positive human potential. It requires the correct training of both your mind and body, and through it we will aim to produce future generations of leaders who are strong, yet courteous, modest and responsible people in the community. This process of character & self-development takes time, it does not happen overnight, the physical techniques ,skills, and your SELF, need to be mastered first through the process of self-discipline in the dojo under an understanding & guiding sensei, (instructor) who knows & understands , & who also has been put through this same training process himself. If you do not undergo this process of SELF -DEVELOPMENT, you will not understand and appreciate self-discipline nor what you are learning & why. That is why you must observe all rules of etiquette at all times during training, otherwise you will never learn anything in life without observing the appropriate rules of self-discipline. This is the requirement as set out by Aktar sensei 6th Dan for all students/Members to follow. If you are happy to follow these guidelines as a member, then you are welcome to practise with us. We hope that every aspiring member will follow these guidelines for the mutual benefit of themselves and others, so that we will continue to grow together positively as a family of martial artists in the community pursuing a like-minded hobby, sport, & past time, and all our efforts & contribution to this end will be appreciated by the society as a whole....But the best reason to join is for karate itself. Karate is not an easy art. But it is an art. And like any art the more you put into it, the more you will gain. Ka-ra-te enriches you physically, mentally, and spiritually — developing your body, your mind, and your character. Why? Because the Shotokan JKA karate is the strongest and most traditional karate there is. We see it first as a martial art way of life & not only as a sport. And that is always our emphasis: the whole. The goal is to help you develop every aspect of who you are.
